Use everything at hand for defence
I know it's a bit too early for suggestions, but I still wanted to post this
So, the idea is quite simple - you can use almost any item around you for defence! Running around a work shop and just randomly finding rather simple objects - a broom, a hammer, a rake, heck, even a table's leg! These "weapons" should be rather frequent, but have some kind of penalty:
* Have rather low damage;
* Break extremely fast (like in 20 hits);
* Would have any other kind of penalty, for example, can't aim for separate parts of body.
For example, I present you a hammer!
Uses club animation set
Medium damage
Melee weapon - range 1
Can be used only 35 times, then it breaks
Can't aim for eyes
These weapons should be pretty much anything - a kitchen knife, a rake, a frying pan, a slingshot, a saw, ANYTHING!

New weapons can mean anything - a super rare machinegun that eats through ammo but so it does with zombies, or maybe it's just a BB gun that can burst...
My "suggestion" is to have technically everything you use frequently in real life is usable as a weapon. There are very many games that have these random props around, but let's face it, you can't even pick them up and throw them. Use everything at your hand - a blowtorch, random blunt objects, and what not else. I just came up with another idea - if a shot was critical and the shot killed a zombie, there is a chance the zombie was dismembered. You can pick up the lost body part and use it as a melee weapon Oh god, I'm so random.

Lagmaster: Yes, as Harald said; the point of his suggestion is that these are not really weapons.
The main problem with this is the lack of animation, we couldn't implement a frying pan because your character wouldn't look like he is wielding it. A secondary problem is that I'd hate to flood the game lockers/players' inventory with useless items - useless as soon as you have a gun.
However, I like this idea, and here is how we could implement it:
- We could implement a few things for Unarmed, like small weights/dumbbells to hold in your hands. They would be invisible because you hold it right in the palm of your hand, and they could provide some little extra power to your bare punch.
- For Melee, we could also implement a few things like the ones you mentioned: brooms, table's leg, etc. (We won't implement the hammer, because it would be silly if it wasn't using the sledgehammer animation. Problem is, I want the sledgehammer animation to be menacing: if you see someone with a hammer in his hands, then you can feel a bit safer!)
- Same thing for throwing, some rocks or little items could do the trick.

With ammo so limited, perhaps all guns should have a "backup" melee attack mode
pistols = "pistol whip" using just the punch animation, takes no ammo... probably not good for your gun.
Or perhaps "throw" if you're that desperate.
rifles = "buttstroke" using the club animation, takes no ammo... very bad for your riffle.
perhaps smgs can be jammed to backfire, turning them into a plantable bomb or thrown weapon, hell of a waste though, since you would need a full clip to do it. probably worthless the more i think of that last one.

Your main idea is fine, fully in the SD spirit.
But as the game was not design in that purpose, it would be a very hard task. That would involve to recreate all "object" ingame to be usable in this way. About double attack for gun, it is not possible without some glitch for now.
For our 1st release, we will focus on the reworked combat system only.
